What is tarot or divination?
Tarot is a deck of 78 cards that has been used for centuries as a tool for divination, self-reflection and guidance. Each card in the deck represents a specific archetype, symbol or theme, and can be interpreted in various ways depending on the context and the question being asked.
Divination, on the other hand, is a practice or method used to gain insight or knowledge about the future or hidden aspects of the present or past. It is a way of seeking guidance, understanding, or predictions through various techniques, such as tarot cards, astrology, runes, palmistry, or scrying, among others. That’s not to say it’s a way of predicting a sure outcome, but serves as a tool for evaluating potential paths forward.
Tarot readings typically involve shuffling the deck, focusing on a question or issue, and then drawing cards from the deck in a specific pattern or spread. The reader interprets the cards based on their symbolism, intuition, and the established meanings associated with each card. The interpretations can offer insights, perspectives, and advice on different aspects of life, including relationships, career, spirituality, and personal development.
It is important to note that tarot and other forms of divination are not inherently magical or supernatural. They are tools that can be used to stimulate reflection, introspection, and facilitate conversations about one’s life circumstances. The interpretations and insights provided by tarot readings are subjective and can vary depending on the reader’s skill, intuition, understanding of the symbolism, and personal beliefs.
What are quality questions?
The quality of a question depends on several factors, such as its clarity, specificity, and relevance to your current situation. Here are some guidelines to consider when formulating tarot questions:
Open-ended questions –
Instead of asking yes/no questions, it’s generally better to ask open-ended questions that encourage exploration and provide deeper insights. For example, instead of asking, “Will I get the job?” you could ask, “What can I do to increase my chances of success in my job search?”
Focus on yourself –
Divination is most effective when you seek guidance about yourself and your own actions rather than trying to control or predict the actions of others. Questions that begin with “How can I…?” or “What should I…?” tend to be more productive.
Specificity –
The more specific your question, the more detailed and precise the reading can be. Vague or broad questions may lead to ambiguous or unclear answers. Try to hone in on a particular aspect or issue you want insights on.
Empowerment and growth –
Ask questions that empower you to facilitate personal growth. For example, instead of asking, “Will I ever find love?” you could ask, “What can I do to attract a loving and fulfilling relationship into my life?”
Ethical considerations –
Avoid questions that invade someone’s privacy or seek to manipulate or harm others. Respect the privacy and free will of individuals when formulating your questions.
Remember, divination is a tool for self-reflection and perspective. The quality of the answers you receive can be influenced by the way you ask your questions and the intention you bring to the reading. Approach your divinatory readings with an open mind and a willingness to explore the insights provided by the cards.

Meet the reader
I’ve been dabbling in divination since 2018. My first tarot deck was The Fountain – I was drawn to the ethereal artwork. I find divination to be a helpful way to explore different perspectives, offering greater insight into possible pathways and their potential outcomes. It allows us to see circumstances from a new angle, putting ourselves in a different pair of shoes with a fresh set of eyes. It’s like talking to your best friend.
Divination doesn’t predict the future. Instead, we’re able to use it to get a better grip on our understanding of the possibilities.
